July 2001 Kennecott Flash Furnace Shutdown on schedule to implement design improvements to enhance furnace integrity. The new design has the following features: Redesigned all the cooling elements on the side wall, including the latest design technology of Hatch cooling elements; redesigned furnace, including the stadium-type hearth at the end of the furnace reaction tower and the stepped furnace near the furnace sidewall; Sedimentation tank top flat cooling elements were added around the reaction column; the reaction column transition elements were replaced with new design elements and the furnace cooling element monitoring system was improved. The improvements made after the shutdown were summarized and the latest data on smelter performance are given.
