近代以降,新式小学的开设激起了乡村社会的涟漪。衢县前河小学是一所县立完全小学,其低廉的学费,拥有新知识的本土师资,女童开始接受教育,识字人数较大增加等,逐步改变着乡村社会的面貌,但在校舍选择、女生入学等方面也与乡土社会相矛盾。在国民政府设计下,其课程安排、教学内容及假期设置大多按照统一规定,忽视了乡土生活实际。其在国民教育中强化三民主义教育、公民教育与党国教育,在民众教育中贯彻国家意志,宣传对国家的认同,均加速了现代国家形成的进程。抗战爆发后,学校教育成为扩大社会动员的平台,师生们柔性而煽情的抗战救国宣传更是成为战时动员民众的重要方式,乡村小学也成为国家控制地方社会的有效工具之一。

Rural primary schools also became one of the effective tools for the state to control local communities.
