The original title of the interview uses Bresson’s phrase: “I seek not an description of things (une description des choses) but an une vision des choses.” In French, The basic meaning of vision is “vision”, “perception”, “imagination”, “image”, “illusion” and so on. Perhaps in Bresson’s mind, “description” focuses on photographic depictions of things, while “visual” focuses on the artist’s own subjective feelings. Bresson has always emphasized the important role of intuition in artistic creation, and does not like describing things like a camera. This interview was made in June 1983, after film “Money” took part in Cannes International Film Festival and was interviewed at St Louis where Bresson lived. This article is translated from the “positive” magazine 1996 the twelfth period.
