萧红是一位命运悲苦但富有传奇色彩的现代女作家,她的一生颠沛流离、悲凉短暂。传统观念里的“母亲”一直是伟大和崇高的化身,是牺牲和奉献的代名词,而萧红划开笼罩在“母性”之上的灼人光辉,使被施予了华丽外衣的“母性”骤然赤裸,她笔下的母亲不仅形体、相貌丑陋,而且大多在无爱的婚姻中进行着动物似的生育,游走在生死的边缘,为“物”而疯狂,都是自私、冷酷、残暴的母亲。萧红之所以淡漠母爱,颠覆母爱,与她成长历程中母爱的缺失、贫穷的流亡生活及萧红对母性的颠覆性认识密切相关。
