Recently, David Smith’s sculptures were exhibited at the Museum of Modern New York to make the artist once again gain the attention of people. David Smith (1906-1965) was one of the first American sculptors to create metal welded sculptures and was recognized as the greatest American sculptor of his generation. He created the most memorable work of the 20th century, featuring the use of industrial materials, particularly the welding of steel and the exploration of open and linear structures, to transform the art of sculpture in the United States and the West as a whole. His work embodies the spiritual essence of the U.S. transformation from a rural agricultural society to an urban industrial society. Faced with this new era of mechanized control, Smith is convinced that artists should also accept industrial materials and technologies.
