Researchers at the University of Alabama (UAB) and the Forsyth Dental Center found that chimeric proteins made of dental caries-resistant Streptococcus mutans (Sm) antigens are effective in a caries mouse model. Researchers at UAB have developed a double-headed synthetic antigen with a glucose-binding domain of Sm-glycosyltransferase on one side that helps bacteria attach to the tooth’s surface and speculate that antibodies against this enzyme stop bacterial attachment.
