The nineteenth-century North American Review was accompanied by the call of the American literary community to establish its own literature, freeing itself from the shackles of the British tradition. James Russell Lowell is one of the most important critics of the North American Review. His attitude toward the national character of literature is traditional, but not conservative, and he rejects the notion of breaking with European cultural traditions in pursuit of the so-called nationality. His literary criticism is rooted in British classics. Lowell was deeply influenced by romanticism in his early years. Literary criticism embodied a very strong personal emotionalism. Later, his attitude of criticism became calm and rational.
