The authors studied 16 patients with essential hypertension using a placebo-controlled, cross-over study to investigate the effects of nicardipine and captopril on blood pressure and heart rate when used alone or in combination. Mean arterial pressure (P <0.001) and heart rate (P <0.005) were significantly lower in subjects receiving a single oral dose of captopril 50 mg at 1 hour. There was no significant correlation between mean arterial pressure reduction and baseline before treatment. A single intravenous infusion of nicardipine 2 mg (at least 5 minutes bolus) resulted in a significant reduction in mean arterial pressure (P <0.001) and a significant increase in heart rate (P <0.001).
