The blast furnace process is an ancient metallurgical process that has seen tremendous progress and continuous improvement in recent decades. Blast furnace ironmaking requires large amounts of coal and coke as reducing agents for iron ore, resulting in CO2 emissions. In order to meet the requirements of minimizing carbon footprint, CO2 emissions must be drastically reduced. All waste from steel production also needs to be disposed of to meet zero discharge requirements. In the recent decade, LKAB, Luleå, Sweden, has conducted several blast furnace process innovations on pilot blast furnaces, introducing relevant developments including ultra-low-volume smelting, blast furnace dust injection, Slag blowing and oxygen blast furnace technology.
