On July 11, the U.S. ambassador to Burma arrived in Yangon alone for the first time in 22 years. On the same day, the Obama administration announced that the United States will further relax its economic sanctions against Burma and allow U.S. businesses to cooperate with Burmese state-owned oil and gas companies. As early as this spring, the United States announced that it will return to Myanmar after its ambassador to Burma was withdrawn in 1990 and that some of the restrictions on Myanmar are economically relaxed. Therefore, Burmese political circles smell the potential opportunities for oil and gas industry. They foreshadowed that as the United States and the EU are likely to lift their sanctions on Myanmar in a substantial manner in the future, the consequent foreign investment will bring drastic changes to the Myanmar oil and gas industry.
