The performance of the Tilt Counterflow Precipitator was tested and it was found that significant separation point control was possible with respect to particle size grading, providing an alternative to hydrocyclones. Fine-grained bituminous coal suspension (generally less than 300μm) was fed into a container of 25mm diameter and 1.4m long with a container inclination of 45 °. The slurry flows through the vessel and the coarser particles settle on the lower part of the tube wall, causing the remaining suspension to become finer and finer in particle size. Precipitated particles slides down the tube wall, pumped slurry from the bottom of the vessel at higher slurry concentrations, and the remaining slurry flows from the top of the vessel. The tests were conducted using eight different feed concentrations, ranging from 2.4 to 21.7% solids.
