晚清民国时期,自然灾害与兵燹战乱造成了数量庞大的灾黎难民,迫切地需要社会救助。然而,政府却因兵革屡兴、吏治腐败、财政匮乏等因素,无力开展有效的赈济。于是,以地方精英为主导的民间力量开始肩负起社会救济的重任。随着书画家力量的成长壮大,书画市场的繁荣,美术家群体将艺术活动与慈善事业密切结合起来,义不容辞地担负起社会救济的重任,为当时慈善事业的发展作出了应有的贡献。
During the period of the Republic of China in the late Qing Dynasty, natural disasters and war of brutal infighting caused a huge number of refugees and displaced persons, and they desperately needed social assistance. However, the government is unable to carry out effective relief because of factors such as repeated military campaigns, official corruption and lack of financial means. As a result, civil elites led by local elites have begun to shoulder the task of social relief. As the power of calligraphists and painters grow and flourish, the prosperity of the calligraphy and painting market brings together the artists’ activities with charity. It is incumbent upon them to shoulder the heavy responsibility of social relief and make due contributions to the development of philanthropy at that time.
