In mainland China today, is there still some discrimination against working women? If in the cities of the 1950s people would categorically reply: Nothing. However, the situation is much more complex today. Last year, 300,000 copies of the “China Women’s Daily” published articles on criticizing inequalities between men and women in recruitment, enrollment and promotion of cadres in some places. In 1984, the government agencies in Mingyue Town, Antu County, Jilin Province, recruited 45 workers and only nine women. One of the young women who did well but failed to be hired wrote a letter to the All-China Women’s Federation Chairman: "The Constitution explicitly stipulates equality between men and women. This treatment of our girls too unfair, unreasonable, nor legal. In her letter, she said that since 1973, the Women’s Federation has done a great deal of work in protecting the legitimate rights and interests of women.
