There are about 300 million people with asthma in the world, and asthma is a chronic disease characterized by asthma, trouble breathing, cough, and tightness in the chest. Two research groups now identify four novel genetic variants associated with asthma in their own separate studies, published in the August issue of Nature - Genetics. Dara Torgerson and colleagues report that by analyzing 18,065 people from different ethnic groups, they identified a new genetic locus associated with asthma on the PYHIN1 gene. This correlation is only for people of African descent. In another study, Mayumi Tamari analyzed 7,171 Japanese asthma patients in which three new genetic loci associated with asthma susceptibility were identified in this Asian population.
