著名经济学家、诺奖得主斯蒂格利茨在2015年1月的《名利场》(Vanity Fair)上以《中国世纪》(Chinese Century)为题,不无夸张地指出:以“购买力平价”为衡量标准,中国在2015年已经成为了世界最大的经济体。就该观点的学术性加以缠辩,或许会错失问题的真正价值。这套修辞背后的真实意图乃是:中国世纪的到来已是大势所趋,因而问题的关键在于美国如何接受这一经济现实,并对这一转变做出恰当的反应。

The debate on the academic nature of this view may miss the true value of the problem. The true intention behind this rhetoric is: The advent of the Chinese century is the general trend of the times. Therefore, the crux of the issue lies in how the United States embraces this economic reality and will respond appropriately to this change.
