笔墨,是中国写意画最基本的技法表征,二者密不可分。墨靠笔运,笔依墨现。笔不能离墨,离墨则无笔;墨不能离笔,离笔则无墨。但笔与墨的变化,除行笔变化外,关键在于用水。水虽无色,但墨色的多变,依水而存。清代张式《画潭》中曰:“笔法既领会,墨法尤当深究,画家用墨最吃紧事。墨法在用水,以墨为形,以水为气,气行形乃活矣。古人水墨并称,实是至理。”清代松年《颐园论画》也说:“万 Pen and ink, is the most basic representation of Chinese freehand painting techniques, the two are inseparable.
