The Advanced Short Range Air-To-Air Missile (ASRAAM) program is a joint project between the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy to develop and secure the successor to the AIM-9 rattlesnake used in the Air Navy aircraft in the late 1980s and beyond. In 1977, Congress rejected the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy’s $ 5.9 million request for air-to-air missiles for line-of-sight (WVR) air-to-air missiles. Only 1.6 million U.S. dollars have been approved for a detailed analysis of AIMVAL results prior to entering the joint program. These funds are used to better analyze and explain the results of air-to-air missile tests and to assess possible process defects related to price and reliability.
