The development of crude steel The production of crude steel in West Germany shows that there is now a clear trend toward oxygen-only steelmaking and EAF steelmaking (Figure 1). The same is true in Japan. Oxygen furnace steel accounted for 81% of the total output, electric furnace steel accounted for 15%, marking the current situation in the West Germany steel industry. As far as the world situation is concerned, 50% of the steel output in 1980 was oxygen furnace steel and the rest were open hearth furnaces and electric furnace steels, each accounting for about half of the total.
