20世纪80年代,医院制剂发展到达高峰,几乎北京地区二级以上医院都有自己的制剂室,生产着上百种制剂。到了90年代,医院制剂开始逐渐滑坡。21世纪初,医院制剂的数量萎缩了近一半。北京儿童医院制剂室曾拥有120多种医院制剂,而目前仅剩下80多种,这其中还有20多种因为没有厂家供应原材料而不得不停止生产;北京医院制剂室在最鼎盛时期拥有180多种医院制剂,目前只有近80种还在投入生产;北京友谊医院制剂室原有医院制剂240多种,目前已经缩减为120多种;北京宣武医院曾有医院制剂116种,而现存医院制剂已经不足原来的1/2;北京大学第一医院曾拥有医院制剂220多种,现在能够投入生产的只有92种……在记者采访中,很多患者反映他们现在很难买到疗效好、又廉价的医院制剂。一些临床医生也反映,越来越多疗效好的医院制剂的消失给他们治疗造成了影响。
