钮制隋唐以后,官印不再佩带,且因公文书盛行用纸,于是印面渐大,不再局限在方寸之间。但官印仍以略长的方形为主,至于临时任命等,也有长方形的关防。明清时,又有以官印大小区别官阶大小之制。总之,隋唐之后,印章起了较大变化,而且由于无须穿绶佩带,因此印钮也不再需要钮孔。为了方便把持钤盖,钮制逐渐加大、加高,与前代穿孔系带的小钮迥然不同。
