As an architect, planner, theorist and social activist, Charles Curie of India has become an important figure in the modern architecture community. After completing his architecture studies at the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958, he returned to Mumbai and began to devote himself to architectural design practice. His architectural designs have spread throughout India, and he has spearheaded the development of third-world low-cost housing. In 1964, together with two colleagues, he proposed the idea of rebuilding Mumbai - a concept that was later adopted by the government. By 1970, 55,000 acres of land had been allocated for this purpose. For the design and development of this new cross-harbor Mumbai metropolitan area, the Indian government also set up an urban industrial development company. In the early stages of development, Correa served as chief architect for Metro Planning (honorary position). In addition, he has been chairman of the Mumbai Urban Development Authority Housing Committee and Chairman of the Government of India National City Council since 1985.
