  VI. 閱读理解。(30分)
  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C或D)中,选出最佳选项。
  A
Farming was once the chief way of life in nearly every country. People cannot live without food, and nearly all their food comes from crops and animals raised on farms. Many other materials such as cotton and wool also come from plants and animals raised on farms. Not many people farm for a living any more, but farming remains the most important work in the world at present.
Before the nineteenth century, the typical American family lived on a small farm. They raised pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and planted corn, beans, fruits, garden vegetables, rice, and wheat. Everyone worked long and hard, but the results were often poor. Families harvested just enough food for themselves. This situation began to change during the last half of the 1800 s and it changed very clearly in the following century.
Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery have made farming increasingly productive in the US. The development of improved plant varieties and chemical fertilizers has helped double and even triple (三倍) the production of some major crops. More scientific animal care and animal raising have helped increase the amount of meat and other products animals produce. At the same time, the use of tractors and other modern farm equipment has sharply reduced the need for farm labor.
As farming has become less important as a way of life in the United States, it has become more important as a source which offers materials to industry. Today s successful farmers are experts not just in agriculture but also in accounting (会计), marketing and finance (金融). Farms that are not run in a similar way have great difficulty competing.
  1. What does the first paragraph tell us about?
  A. The history of farming.              B. The importance of farming. C. The development of farming.          D. The changes of farming.
  2. Which of the following describes American farming before the 19th century?
  A. Farmers didn t work hard on their farms.
  B. Farmers used tractors to help them.
  C. Farming was the main way of living for most people.
  D. Farmers could supply materials to industry.
  3. What have helped farming improved increasingly?
  A. Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery.
  B. Scientific ideas and increasing farm labor.
  C. Modern farm equipment and farmers  work.
  D. Modern farm equipment and scientific care.
  4. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
  A. Traditional American farming.
  B. The increase in the number of crops in the US.
  C. Modern farming methods.             D. American farmers  hard work.
  B
Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.
One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.
Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long. 5. Which sentence carried the main idea of the whole passage?
  A. The first sentence of the first paragraph.
  B. The first sentence of the second paragraph.
  C. The first sentence of the third paragraph.
  D. The last sentence of the second paragraph.
  6. According to the passage, computers can NOT help farmers decide ____.
  A. how much money they can earn from their products
  B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop
  C. what livestock to raise
  D. when to sell their products
  7. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
  A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.
  B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today s farms.
  C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.
  D. Students at agricultural colleges must take computer classes because they can do nothing without the help of computers on today s farms.
  8. What is the best title for the whole passage?
  A. Computer, Farmers  Best Friend     B. Farmers in the Future
  C. The Agricultural Revolution         D. Computers and Robots

United Nations Day, October 24, is coming, yet the organization s Secretary-General Kofi Anna admits it is “at a crossroads” and the future is unclear. The problems arose that a war in Iraq happened without the UN s permission. Since then people have been asking whether the UN can really make the world a safer place.
The UN officially began on October 24, 1945, with the introduction of the UN Charter (聯合国宪章). Despite being a product of war, the Charter expressed the hopes of one world: peace, equality, justice, development and human rights.
With the threat of unclear war and many regional conflicts to sort out, peace-keeping has become the UN s main responsibility. The UN Development Programme sets up projects for agriculture, industry, education and the environment in more than 170 countries and regions. The UN Children s Fund alone gives $800 million a year to help young people receive food, health care and education. As a result of the UN s work, fewer children are forced to become soldiers, African farmers can listen to the radio and people can rebuild their lives after years of war.
However, since the early 1900s, many people feel the UN s role in keeping international peace has been weakened. Some countries have demanded the UN changes the way it is managed. The Security Council (安理会), for example, is made up of China, Russia, Britain, France and the US, with another 10 countries taking part in turn every two years. In this way, it is felt the UN favors the western nations over Africa, Latin America and Asia. 9. How long has the United Nations been founded?
  A. Over 50 years.      B. Over 60 years.     C. Over 70 years.    D. Over 80 years.
  10. Why does the UN Department Program set up projects?
  A. Peace, development, human rights and education.
  B. Agriculture, development, equality and education.
  C. Peace, agriculture, equality and environment.
  D. Agriculture, industry, education and environment.
  11. The underlined phrase “sort out” in paragraph 3 means ____ in English.
  A. work out     B. take out      C. put out       D. turn out
  12. From the passage, we can infer that the UN will ____.
  A. face many new problems    B. be weakened in future
  C. receive many challenges    D. play an important role
  D
Our future climate will be decided partly by greenhouse gases we give off. Levels of the emission (釋放) of greenhouse gases are decided by future development in our economy, technological development and population growth. Scientists have described four different pictures of the future according to the changes in population size, wealth, use of energy sources and energy technology up to the year 2100.
  ▲▲Population size
Each person has his own type of consumption. Especially the cars we drive result in the emission of greenhouse gases. The more people there are living on the earth, the greater the emission is.
  ▲▲A rich world
The richer we are, the more we consume and the greater the emission is. Very rapid economic growth, low population growth and rapid introduction of new technology can reduce the warming up of the world.
  ▲▲Consumption of fossil fuels (矿物燃料)
Fossil fuels give off greenhouse gases when they are burnt, while renewable sources of energy, such as wind energy or solar power, do not give off such emissions. The kind of fossil fuels we burn also matters. Coal gives off more CO2 than natural gas.
  ▲▲A world of rapid changes
Concern for the environment will speed up development of new technologies to avoid using fossil fuels. Great changes will take place here and there. Technology develops rapidly in some areas while other areas are changing their outdated technology.
Scientists come up with the figure of a temperature increase between 2.4 and 5.8℃ by the year 2100, which is very dangerous. But if all the countries take new measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, the world in the future will be better than we imagine. 13. What is the best title for the passage?
  ____________________________
  14. What are people to do because of worrying about the matters of fossil fuels?
  ____________________________
  15. What does the underlined word “emissions” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?

How to Stop Being Late All the Time
If you ve been tired of being late constantly, it s time for you to use your brain and come up with the solution. _1_
Never explain why you re late. If you don t allow yourself to make excuses, you ll stop letting yourself off the hook. And you ll realize how silly the reasons that you ve been handing out are.
_2_ That s the right thing to do.
Delete(刪除) something from your schedule. One per day, or one per week, depending on how terrible your lateness is. _3_ When you have that free time, use it to get ready for the next appointment.
Calculate how much your lateness costs you. If you re paid hourly, find out how much less you make when you clock in late. If you take more expensive means of transportation, calculate the cost difference. _4_
_5_ Think about the peace of mind as you wait for the other persons. Think about standing from your seat, warmly greeting them and forgiving their own lateness. Think about how embarrassed they are when they turn up out of breath.
Plan exactly what you ll do on your phone while you wait for everyone else to show up. That s free time, when you re allowed to do anything you like. You can play a mobile game or watch YouTube with zero guilt. Get excited, not for the thing you re heading to, but for those five minutes alone before it starts.
  A. Think about being early.
  B. Don t do anything else during that time.
  C. Being late can also waste a little money.
  D. See how much you spend each year on lateness.
  E. Make full use of every minutes to do your work well.
  F. Apologize why you are late instead of focusing on causes.
  G. With the following tips, you will form a good habit of being on time.

What is the best feeling in the world? Winning an important game? _1_ (complete) a big goal? Some people just like _2_ (jump) into a warm bed on a cold day. Other people like the feeling they get from exercise. No matter what it is, when we feel _3_ (we) best, we are on top of the world. To be on top of the world _4_ (be) to feel like life couldn t be any better. This feeling often comes after doing something important. _5_ example, it s common for singers to be on top of the world after _6_ (perform)  for a big crowd. Also, students graduating from university often feel on top of the world after finishing _7_ (class). Singer Shania Twain stopped making music for _8_ while, so she felt on top of the world once she started up again. She thinks that when people do what they love to do, it is the _9_ (good) feeling in the world. _10_ makes you feel on top of the world?
