Parts of gas turbines exposed to hot gases can be damaged for a variety of reasons. Some common types of damage are localized corrosion, cracks due to thermal fatigue, impacts of foreign objects, creep, and partial defect of parts. The high cost of replacing new parts and components has stimulated worldwide interest in refurbishing damaged gas turbine parts. The development results reported in this article in this area were taken from the BE 4314 project of the BRITE EURAM institute belonging to the European Community. They used CO 2 lasers to develop repair processes for a variety of different types of damage. they
