Changes in the expression of type I and type II collagen in cultured human articular chondrocytes (HACs) were compared. Samples were taken from the hip cartilage of 8 patients (mean age 78.2 years) undergoing arthroplasty with femoral neck fractures. HACs were isolated and cultured monolayer for 46 days. Fibroblasts were isolated from the hip joint capsule and cultured as a control. Cartilage sections were stained for analysis of aminodextran sulfate. The monolayer cultured HACs were immunocytochemically analyzed with anti-human type I and type II collagen antibodies and with biotin conjugated horse anti-mouse secondary antibody, respectively.
