Although people are concerned about the low doses of mutagens and carcinogens present in drinking water, they do not understand the nonvolatile organic matter. To this end, the author conducted a study. The results showed that chlorination can produce non-volatile mutagens in drinking water, while sulfite treatment of chlorinated water greatly reduces the mutagen. During the period from September to December 1978, the author studied several water samples from urban sewage treatment plants after lime softening treatment.
