曾经辉煌过,车水马龙,高堂明镜;曾经威严过,二万余八旗、绿营兵,雄镇边关。惠远:伊犁将军掌管着天山南北及巴尔喀什湖以东以南广大地区的军政要地。1864年3月8日,震耳欲聋的爆破声,惠远古城北城墙轰塌处,硝烟弥漫……,伊犁将军明绪见大势已去,举家自焚,起义军冲进惠远古城。屠城一日,接着一把大火,把伊犁将军府各衙署,连同一万多间民宅,化为灰烬。这就是1864年伊犁农民起义惊心动魄的一幕。一个经过百余年,精心营建的古城,数日内幻化成一片废墟。
