鸦片战争以来,面对西方列强的侵略压迫和社会的腐朽不堪,中国国内掀起了一场自上而下的社会变革,这场以西为师的社会变革涉及到了政治、文化、经济等各个领域,而学堂乐歌正是文化变革带动下音乐界向西方学习的直接产物。作为学堂乐歌时期代表人物的沈心工、曾志忞等,在这一时期受西方文化思想的影响,对中国传统音乐大多持批判的态度,并以进化论作为理论武器,强调中西音乐之间的巨大
Since the Opium War, in the face of the aggressive oppression by the Western powers and the decadent social instability, a top-down social change has taken shape in China. The social transformation that takes West as a teacher involves various fields such as politics, culture and economy. The school music is the cultural revolution led by the music industry to learn from the West a direct product. As a representative of the school singing period, Shen Xin-kong and Eric Tsang were mainly influenced by Western cultural thoughts during this period. They always held a critical attitude toward traditional Chinese music and used evolutionism as a theoretical weapon to emphasize the huge gap between Chinese and Western music
