A summary of the state-of-the-art in nuclear magnetic resonance logging technology has given non-specialists who want to know NMR logging capabilities to the understanding of the formations of some NMR logging tools. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the basic principles and interpretation of NMR spectroscopy. Several examples of these methods are discussed. The pulsed NMR logging tool introduced in the 1990s provided the petroleum industry with a unique and even revolutionary new way to analyze reservoir fluids, rocks, and the interactions between them. Drilling progressed rapidly since the 1970s, necessitating new instruments to evaluate more complex reservoirs for exploration and development, a technique that coincides with a sharp drop in oil production. Pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance logging tools have brought new and unique methods of formation evaluation and have been rapidly evolving since the beginning. NMR logging services are offered by today’s big service companies such as Baker Hughes, Halliburton and Schlumberger.
