解放以前,西盟佤族社会存在着约占总人口4—5%的奴隶。研究佤族奴隶占有关系,不仅对正确认识解放前西盟佤族的社会性质有重要意义,而且对研究人类奴隶制的产生和发展也有一定价值。一、佤族奴隶占有关系的产生和发展恩格斯说:“农业家族内的自然形成的分工,达到一定的富裕程度时,就有可能吸收一个或几个外面的劳动力到家族里来。在旧的土地公有制已经崩溃或者至少是旧的土地共同耕作制已经让位给各个家族的小块土地耕作制的那些地方,上述情形尤为常见。”
