Infection with the respiratory syncy- tial virus (RSV) in hospitals is a serious problem, especially in infants with heart and lung conditions such as congenital heart disease or in immunocompromised conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the most effective measures to control infection and to prevent nosocomial infections in general pediatric wards with limited isolation equipment. PATIENTS AND METHODS Respiratory secretions were tested for RSV antigen within 18 hours of hospital admission regardless of their clinical presentation during the three winter RSV epidemics between 1989 and 1992.
