Before the 1970s, potato seed in Sri Lanka was totally dependent on imports. The high cost and poor adaptability forced the Sri Lankan government to implement a program to produce seed in the 1970s. Initially, the state planted the seed potatoes imported from abroad on farms in developed areas to expand their breeding to produce standard seed potatoes suitable for local natural conditions as the seed potatoes to be planted in large areas for the next season. Since then, the history of all imported seed potatoes has been completed and the production cost has been greatly reduced.
