1. Loneliness and the same dangers of smoking Having a meaningful relationship is the key to a happy and self-fulfilling life. Long-term loneliness can damage our most basic happiness. In addition to causing emotional distress and craving, loneliness can lead to depression, suicidal tendencies and behaviors, hostility and sleep disorders. More importantly, loneliness has a devastating effect on our overall health. It affects the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system (leading to increased blood pressure, weight and cholesterol index), the endocrine system (stress hormones) and even the immune system.
