翦伯赞1898年4月14日出生在湖南桃源县一个维吾尔族家庭,1903年入私塾启蒙,次年转入清真小学,1908年入县立高等小学堂,1910年入常德中学预科,1912年升入本科,1916年毕业后考入北京政法专门学校,后转入武昌商业专门学校。1919年毕业后在母校常德中学任英语教员。1924年夏,他赴美国加利福尼亚大学研究经济,1925年回国。
