The experimental animals were 7-week-old Wistar male rats. The 85% ethanol-soluble powder was obtained from the dialysate of the sweet potato root bark extract. This was dissolved in a 15% trichloroacetic acid solution, centrifuged, and the supernatant was dialyzed to give fraction 1. Ethanol-soluble powder was subjected to butyl-Toyopar hydrophobic chromatography to obtain fraction 2. The component 3 was further purified by hydrophobic chromatography using phenyl-Toyopal. Component 3 was ultrafiltered to give component 4 and components 4A, 4B. The samples were given to the tail vein (4, 2, 2, 2, and 1 mg/kg, respectively).
