全世界大概有150种魟鱼,大多分布在热带和亚热带的海洋里,少数种类生活在近赤道的淡水河流域[1].由于魟鱼的尾部具有毒棘,人魟鱼中毒的案例时有发生,美国每年有750~2000例魟鱼中毒病例被报道[1-2].由于中毒患者及医务人员缺乏对魟鱼种类的形态学鉴别能力,所以自20世纪50年代开始有魟鱼中毒报道以来,急性南美江魟(Potamotrygon motoro)巾毒的典型案例报道甚少,其毒性、中毒机制等研究也非常有限,往往造成其中毒诊断不明,延误了患者的最佳治疗时机.
