边疆学研究在我国有很悠久的历史。周秦以还,记述我国边疆历史地理、区划沿革、民族民俗、政军文教、治边防边政策以及边疆重要人物事件的典籍,卷帙浩繁,即使穷个人毕生之精力,亦难免兴“以有涯逐无涯”之叹。洎乎有清一代,先是因奠定中国多民族统一国家的需要,后又因边疆出现全面危机,更促使许多封疆大吏、仁人学士关注边疆问题,留下的有关边疆的资料典籍、档案著述可谓汗牛充栋。这说明,我们先人是十分看重边疆问题研究的。
