任何画种的发生一般都不是一个偶然事件,而是经历了一个漫长过程。西方绘画从淡彩画到油画,到水彩画发生虽是共时性的关系,但都伴随着文艺复兴的新潮和资本主义生产方式的形成与发展。水彩画最早缘起于德国,15世纪德国画家丢勒(Albrecht Dürer,1471—1528)的作品《小野兔》被认为是史上第一幅水彩画。受材料限制,18世纪,水彩画在英国才逐步发展完善,以一个独立画种的身份登上画坛。
