Thymus atrophy, hepatomegaly, and significant copper deficiency indications, including serum Cp activity, Cu content, CCO and Cu, and Zn-SOD activity, were significantly reduced in 3-week-old mice fed a 6-week diet deficient in copper. The levels of TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-6 produced by the deficient mice were significantly lower than those of normal mice. After 7 weeks of zinc deficiency diet, the mice showed obvious hair removal. Although the content of Zn in the liver was not significantly reduced, the activities of TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-6 were significantly decreased, indicating that these cytokines are sensitive to zinc deficiency in mice One of the indications. Our results demonstrate the importance of normal levels of Cu and Zn on the production of TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-6 and suggest that these cytokines may be deficient in copper and zinc-deficient immune-compromised cells and in molecular mechanisms one.
