In May 1999, People’s Literature Publishing House launched a novel “Chinese Painting.” This oceanographic book of 500,000 words has been praised as “presenting a generation of spiritual comic ” because of its subtle portrayal of Chinese officialdom and even the world. Chinese painting was reprinted five times in more than two months; for more than a decade, only five million books were allegedly pirated. This should be a hard-to-break record in Chinese publishing history. As a result, the author Wang Yuewen got the title of “the first person in Chinese official fiction”. In fact, the “traditional Chinese painting” is based on the officialdom as the background and the power struggle as the main content. What Wang Yuewen exemplifies in his novels is what lies deep in human nature. He is superficial and arbitrary for readers and critics to put his work on “officialdom literature”
