This article analyzes the fiscal consolidation in the Netherlands, especially the politics of consolidation and reduction. We discussed the contents of fiscal consolidation measures and the political decision-making process that formed them. Analysis of political decisions focuses on the characteristics and stages of decision-making. The fiscal consolidation analyzed in this article is divided into three phases: the formulation of a joint agreement in October 2010; the adoption of a spring agreement in April 2012; and the implementation of a joint agreement in October 2012. These three stages show a clearer understanding of the need to reduce fiscal spending significantly. Policy making is mainly characterized by mutual compromise, that is, incremental, comprehensive and gradual measures. However, in the later stages of the fiscal crisis, hesitant attempts to set particular political priorities were made.
