文徵明的众多别号图内容丰富,含义深远,通过不同方式对“别号”意涵进行了阐释。其中,有的借用了物象的象征意义,直接图解号义,简单明了;有的则采用了“书斋山水”的模式,通过对自然空间、书斋别业和人物活动的描绘,间接体现了别号概念,是文徵明别号图的经典模式;另外还有几件作品,虽然并非传统意义上的别号图,却具有相似的性质、内容与立意。文徵明的别号图并非别号的简单图示说明,其通过各种元素展示了文士生活的各个方面,旨在体现主人生活的高雅与精神的崇高,反映了明代隐居、雅集、筑园、长物的社会风尚,突显了别号图的文人性质与精英性质,使其成为了文人展示品味和亮明身份的舞台,别有深意。
