Objective To investigate the changes of maximal forced inspiratory flow in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its significance. Methods The maximum forced inspiratory volume flow curve was measured in 40 healthy subjects and 105 patients with COPD. Results Compared with COPD group, there were significant or very significant differences in inspiratory capacity flow between healthy group and mild COPD group. FIVC, FIV1, FIF75% FIF2 5%, FIF5 0%, FIF75%, PIF were significantly or very significantly different; moderate COPD compared with the severe group FIVC, FIV1, FIF2 5%, FIF5 0% were significantly different. Conclusions FIVC, FIV1, FIF2 5%, FIF5 0%, FIF75%, PIF can be used as indicators to evaluate inspiratory muscle function and are closely related to the severity of COPD
