The Commonwealth of Australia places a lesser emphasis on national archives than in countries in Europe and Australia. When the Commonwealth was established in 1901, six Australian states existed and the history and archives of these states began to form as early as the early nineteenth century. Not only did they realize the existence of the archives before the federal government was founded, they also attached great importance to the collection and preservation of past archives from the very beginning. The newly formed federal government has only a few old archives. The reason why the government cares about archives is mainly because of the drastic increase in federal archives and their irresponsible destruction. From this it can be seen that the federal level initially focused only on receiving, utilizing, preserving, and processing archives that are largely of the twentieth century.
