1 INTRODUCTION Ensuring national food security is a major strategic issue that affects the development of our national economy and social stability. Conventional breeding is confronted with bottlenecks such as long breeding cycle, low efficiency and narrow genetic background, which make it difficult to cultivate breakthrough new breeds. Therefore, breeding theory and technological innovation are the urgent needs of the development of modern seed industry. The key national R & D program “Molecular basis for the formation of major crop yield traits” led by researcher Fu Xiangdong from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences has been approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
