We investigated CO_2 fluxes and CO_2 content gradients of natural and drained plots of aSphagnum-Eriophorium mesotrophic peat in Southern Karelia. The lowest peat is a mesotrophicScheuchzeria-Sphagnum peat, formed about 4070 yr. B.P. The median CO_2 emission rates fornatural and drained plots respectively were 71.0 and 121.3 mg·m~(-3) hr~(-1). Where determined, temperature increase and groundwater level decrease lead to exponential increases in carbondioxide flux. The authors confirm, that in the Atlantic period (climatic optimum of Holocene forNorthern Europe) both accumulation and production by peat soils was greater than at present.
