1998年10月,中国推出第一个国产化 GSM 手机——科健,随后夏华、东方通讯、TCL、厦新、康佳等十多个国内企业相继推出了自己品牌的 GSM 手机。国产手机加入市场与洋品牌竞争,给民族自尊心特强的中国人带来了希望。从无到有,无疑是国产手机的一大进步,然而在世界范围内,GSM 即将出局,GDMA 锋芒毕露,国外手机生产企业正在考虑放弃 GSM 市场。有专家预测说,GSM 在中国还会有十年发展空间,可十年后呢?十年后的中国人全用被淘汰手机?国产手机入市之际,诺基亚便率先推出了第一款WAP 上网手机 NOKIA7110,摩托罗拉、爱立信、西门子、三星随即争相推出几种型号的上网手机。国内手机生产企业与洋厂家相比,技术上整整落后一代。WAP 只有外国厂家才能生产,这似乎成为国人公认的事实。WAP 手机以不容质疑的科技含量获得高贵的身份,追求财富和时尚的富人把它视为身份的新象征。但有人不信 WAP 只是洋人的专利,立志要打破只有外国才能生产高档手机的神话。
