Mass spring systems are commonly used to develop compression form-finding systems. The paper proposes the use of a mass-spring system to respond to the ideal form, thereby generating a volume-only variable volume-only compressive structure. By changing the depth and volume of the system, the load is redirected through the material depth to produce the ideal form that is the inverse of the best form of the structure (uniform thickness). The article explains how to generate, build, and test compression-only arches that consist of variable volume cells. This research will drive the development of physical volumetric and volume-building methods and allow for integration with external programs, input of idealized forms, and construction of compressible structures that can be built.
