In recent years, scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the United States have reported continuously on the discovery of a tumor cell growth hormone that attempts to explain how tumor cells can grow uncontrollably. NCI oncologist Todaro purified the hormone and called it the transforming growth factor (TGF). TGF is a group of polypeptides secreted by tumor cells during the growth process. Therefore, it can be extracted from the culture fluid of tumor cell lines or directly extracted from solid tumor tissues. NCI’s team has discovered this class of peptides in the urine of untreated melanoma, bronchial carcinoma in situ, breast cancer, kidney cancer, oat cell lung cancer, and certain sarcoma patients. Recently, we have also isolated and initially purified TGF from untreated small cell lung cancer patients with urine, pleural effusion from patients with small cell lung cancer, and cultured lung adenocarcinoma cell lines from China.
