詹姆斯·乔伊斯在西方被认为是二十世纪最重要、最有影响的小说家之一,尤其以长篇意识流小说而闻名于世。《都柏林人》是乔伊斯的第一部作品集。《阿拉比》和《伊芙林》就是其中的两篇小说。在这两篇小说中,主人公都经历了一个由希望到失望甚至绝望的过程,这种相似性不但反映出作者当时的思想感情,也是当时社会的一个缩影。当时的都柏林,整个社会处于瘫痪之中,乔伊斯对都柏林人彻底绝望,他想通过逃离来摆脱现实的希望最终破灭了,最终的顿悟证明这种瘫痪是不可避免的,是社会大环境所造成的。
James Joyce is regarded as one of the most important and influential novelists of the 20th century in the West, especially famous for long stream of consciousness novels. Dubliners is Joyce’s first collection. “Arabi” and “Evelyn” is one of the two novels. In both of these novels, the protagonists have undergone a process from hope to disappointment or even despair. This similarity not only reflects the author’s thoughts and emotions at that time, but also a microcosm of society at that time. At that time in Dublin, the entire society was paralyzed. Joyce completely despair of the Dublins. His hopes of getting rid of the reality by fleeing finally shattered.
