Authors’ words: This article is based on my personal experience. Originally, I was an archivist, and now I am an administrative officer. At the end of the 1970s, when I started to work on archives, the archives work was not the administrative work in the usual sense but an extremely mysterious department. In those years, archivists were thought to be buried in various archives and perform their important duties - to collect and keep archives and documents for historical research and future generations. However, with the development of the times, people’s need for information has changed this understanding. Administrative officials are beginning to realize that archivists are by no means custodians, but rather important workers who provide information to decision-makers. The theme of the 1992 International Archives Conference was “The Role of Archivists in the New Information Age”, which discussed the issue of re-understanding the role of archivists. For our file workers in Botswana, this new concept emerged in 1982 when the government decided to integrate the management of existing documents with the management of archives. This means that the National Archives will play a decisive role in the custody and administration of archives formed by various administrative organs. In order to embody this new responsibility, the National Archives was reorganized in 1985 and renamed as the National Archives and Documentation Service Center. This was a breakthrough at a time when many people were still wondering what exactly the archives was doing. With the introduction of a new service center plan, in 1992, the merger and reorganization plan was officially implemented. In fact, at that time, most people did not realize that archivists played an important role in providing information. What information could archivists provide?
